“Connect before Correct” is a fundamental principle in early childhood education, including kindergarten.

It emphasizes the importance of building positive relationships and connections with children before addressing behavior or academic issues.

Its a very simple key to success for all Early Childhood Educationists.

What this can do:

  • Trust and Safety: When children feel connected to their teachers and caregivers, they feel safe and supported. This trust is essential for their emotional well-being and willingness to engage in learning activities.
  • Emotional Regulation: Building connections helps children regulate their emotions. When they feel understood and cared for, they are better able to manage their feelings, which can lead to improved behavior and academic performance. They will feel being part of and will not feel left out and alone.
  • Effective Communication: Strong relationships foster effective communication between teachers and students. When teachers take the time to connect with children, they can better understand their needs and address any challenges they may be facing. Once connected, many times non-verbal communication as well works very well where mere blinking of eye, a small nod or simply your presence does the wonder.
  • Motivation and Engagement: Children are more likely to be motivated and engaged in learning when they feel connected to their teachers and classmates. A positive classroom environment built on relationships encourages participation and active involvement in learning activities.
  • Resilience and Problem-Solving Skills: When children feel connected and supported, they are more resilient in the face of challenges. They are also more likely to develop problem-solving skills because they feel comfortable seeking help and guidance from their teachers and peers.

Overall, connecting before correcting sets a strong foundation for positive interactions and learning experiences in kindergarten and beyond. It creates a supportive environment where children feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Try to implement in your classroom and feel the magic.

As I am an early year teacher… I relate to it ans we do really first connect the dots and then fill in with corrections.

Before we dive into lessons, let’s make sure we’re building connections. It’s these bonds that pave the way for meaningful learning experiences and lasting memories in our classroom.”

Remember, it’s not just about what we teach, but how we connect. Let’s foster a supportive environment where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.
